Tips for Job Seekers
The Interview
- Arrive 10 minutes early.
- Allow for traffic and weather conditions, and make sure you know where you’re going!
- Clean, presentable clothes (avoid low cut tops, tattered clothing or showing your stomach).
- If you might work in an office, slacks and a nice top are preferred.
- Good hygiene (clean fingernails, washed hair, not visible dirt, etc.)
- Avoid heavy colognes and perfumes.
- If you smoke, make sure you have some time to “air out” after your last cigarette.
- Interviewers want to assess your personality to make sure we place you in the right environment.
- Take a deep breath and try to relax before going into your interview.
- Don’t be afraid to point out things in a position you may not be comfortable with.
- Help us understand what environment you’d like to see yourself end up in, so that we can best match that.
Some examples of questions you may want to ask:
- How many employees will you be working with?
- What are the hours of work?
- Will you be working alone or part of a group/team?
- Is there a dress code?
- What are the Job duties?
- What are the wages and benefits?
- Is there shiftwork involved?
- Is the job onsite/camp?
- Find out a a bit about the company prior to the interview (company size, type of business, etc.)
The Resume
- Check grammar and spelling.
- Check to make sure dates and contact numbers are correct.
- Be honest about your positions- how long, scope of work etc.
- Equipment used.
- Software/programs used.
- Techniques mastered.
- What you did! Your duties and responsibilities.
- Keep your resume clean, not too wordy.
- Point form.
- Use one simple font with key phrases bolded or underlined.
- Preferably supervisors, managers etc.
- Ask if they are okay with you putting them down on your resume as a reference.
- Review the Job Description for the position you are applying for
- Add relevant keywords and duties to your resume as they apply to the position you are seeking
